The Ryder Cup is one of the world’s most prestigious golf tournaments, featuring a matchup between Team Europe and Team USA. The best Golfers in the world compete together for their national team (or continental team in the case of Team Europe). The Ryder Cup is not a stroke play event, but rather a match play competition, where every match is worth one point. A team wins a match by winning the most holes. Whichever team wins 14.5 matches first wins the tournament! This was the First Ryder Cup I had ever watched, and the pros made it look so easy, which made me think, “How hard could it really be?”
In order to answer my question, STVM Golf allowed me to use their state-of-the-art golf simulator and play the first 2 holes of Bethpage Black (Where the 2025 Ryder Cup was held). Before I played on the simulator, I got to speak to the boys’ golf head coach Jim Currie. He answered some of my questions and helped me understand what I was getting into.
Coach Currie told me, “Bethpage Black is an extremely difficult golf course… I would probably shoot around 90 or higher on that course, depending on the conditions. ”He got into coaching here at STVM because, “I really enjoy working with kids and seeing them get better and excel in whatever sport they choose.” Coach Currie has been golfing since high school, saying, “It started out just playing for fun with my friends. After I got into the Air Force, I started to take it seriously and worked to get better. Now I have a 6 handicap and play at least 3-4 times a week and can’t get enough.”
Thank you to Coach Jim Currie for allowing me to use the simulator and for answering all of my questions.
