Do What?
Ah, the penny is one of most recognizable things to the average American with its copper color and Abraham Lincoln on the face of the head’s side, just about everyone’s seen or owned a penny. On Wednesday November 12th, 2025 Philadelphia pressed the final group of pennies making it official that the United States will no longer be producing pennies. This appeared to have been a long time coming since around 2024 as it costs 3.7 cents to produce and distribute the penny.
How Did This Come to be?
The U.S Treasury announced the official end to the penny’s 232 year-old life the same day the last batch of the coins were produced, November twelfth. The last time America saw the discontinuation of a coin was the half-cent in 1857 for the same reasons of being uneconomical to produce.
What’s Next?
Even though it’s discontinued you can still use all your 232 years worth of pennies to your hearts’ extent but overtime there will be a plan to just round up the nearest nickel as the penny will disappear over time. For now though we can make the most of our time left with our beloved coin teaching us to value even the things with the smallest amount.
