Prom Promise
On Friday, April 17th, St. Vincent-St. Mary’s juniors and seniors gathered together for a presentation called Prom Promise. The presentation was led by Akron Fire Dept. District Chief Sierjie Lash. Students were educated on driver safety as they prepared for Prom on April 25th, learning about multiple ways they could be seriously impaired and the dangers that follow.

Statistics
The Akron Fire Department also highlighted some important statistics that revealed the harsh realities that they face every single day. Some of these statistics include:
- Drivers under the age of 24 make up 31% of all vehicle crashes
- Drivers aged 16-19 have a fatality rate of three times that of drivers who are 20 years or older
- 43.1% of high schoolers are not wearing a seatbelt at the time of their crash
Videos
The Akron Fire Department also provided videos that demonstrate the impact vehicle crashes can have on a person and those around them.

Student Interaction
After the Akron Fire Department presented their information, they called up a few students from the bleachers to participate in an activity that demonstrated how impairment can affect everyday tasks. The activity began with students walking heel-to-toe along a straight line on the gym floor. Then, students wore vision-impairing goggles and were asked to walk along the line again. Another activity involved having the students attempt to shoot a basketball.
