May is a time when it gets warmer outside. During May, leaves start to grow back on trees. Flowers and plants start to grow based on the amount of rain in the previous month. The weather becomes warmer and much nicer after a cold winter. In some areas, they don’t really experience a winter, while in others, the winters are brutal and very cold. They also tend to be prolonged, so winter seems to last a really long time. In Ohio, we unfortunately have very long and cold winters. By the time May comes, we are all very excited for the wave of warm weather and the disappearance of the sights and feelings of winter. Ohio is a very beautiful place, with all four seasons present in their own ways. Ohio is also unpredictable, with snow in April and temperatures in the low 60s on Christmas Day. Through these hardships, the people of Ohio always find a way to persevere and adjust to the fluctuating weather.
With May being the month of Mother’s Day, many celebrate their moms, who often work so hard with little recognition. Gifting them flowers, cards, or chocolates, along with kind words, can go a long way toward expressing gratitude. From the STVM Journalism team, thank you, mothers! May is also the month when we crown our divine mother. Many Catholic schools and parishes place a statue of Mary. Liam O’Connor VM27 spoke to the STVM Campus minister, Mrs. Goshe, and she explained that her favorite thing about May is the May Crowning that happens every year. Mrs. Goshe explained to Liam that the May crowning always happens in May because May is Mary’s month. We honor her as the Queen of Heaven by placing a wreath of flowers on her head. They usually do it during the first Friday of May. The first communion kids would crown them, usually after they got communion on the second Friday. In the Catholic Church, we don’t believe she’s divine, but she was set apart and chosen by God for a special purpose. Another one of Mrs. Goshe’s favorite things to do during the month of May is to help others understand the importance of Mary. She recalled John 2:5 when Mary helped Jesus work his first miracle, turning water into wine. She’s always looking to help Mrs. Goshe, and we also expressed how much she loves talking about Mary and how she liked the metaphor that Mary is the moon reflecting the Sun’s (The Son of God’s) light onto us.
Grayson Donahue, VM27, was fortunate to interview Junior JJ Pytash, VM27. JJ said that his favorite thing about May is the Baseball Playoffs because he plays baseball. As a big nature person, JJ looks forward to fishing this summer. He is a big nature person because he enjoys fishing. Hopefully the rain and cold will fade away, as JJ said that he doesn’t like the rain or cold.
We hope you all have a lovely May!
