As we enter the new year, everyone has decided or is still deciding on their New Year’s resolutions. A New Year’s Resolution is a commitment or promise to do something differently in the future. Most people want to drop bad habits or pick up new hobbies. Others want to accomplish something or gain confidence. If you still haven’t decided on a resolution, there are many options to choose from.
Every new year, the resolution should be different from the last, and having more than one will make achieving it much easier. This year, I decided my New Year’s resolution would be less challenging and more realistic. I
chose a goal that fit my standards, and that actually mattered to me. When choosing a resolution, you should feel more confident about the decision. After you accomplish one goal, you’ll want to accomplish more. The idea of change is always uncomfortable at first, but if you don’t try, nothing will improve. In the past, my resolutions never really stuck, and I felt unmotivated after a couple of weeks. The only way to keep me motivated this year is to remind myself why I made the resolution in the first place.

My resolution this year is to read at least 2-3 books a month, whether it’s for an assignment or just for fun. I chose this resolution because it will shift my daily routine and mindset. Unlike other resolutions I’ve made in the past, this one seems a lot more achievable. Don’t overwhelm yourself with resolutions that sound unrealistic. For example, if you want to start working out, you have to take it one day at a time. You can’t just jump right into it; you have to plan accordingly. Focus on something that you can slowly work towards.
New Year’s resolutions taught me that change takes time and things don’t happen right away. Be consistent, plan accordingly, and take baby steps. Focus on doing your best, don’t worry about being perfect, because you can learn from your mistakes as you move forward. Resolutions are not about pressure, but about growth. As long as you continue to be consistent and remind yourself why you chose that resolution in the first place, then you’ll carry out the resolution and have a growth mindset for the rest of the year.
