STVM Movie Club had its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 10th! For the first movie of the year, the club showed Superman, directed by James Gunn. The club drew a large crowd, with over 20 new members joining in just the first meeting! The movie was chosen because of the cultural significance that Superman has to the greater Cleveland area. Jerry Siegel created the character of Superman in Cleveland, Ohio, in the early 1930s. Superman was first published on June 18th, 1938, in DC Comics, Action Comics #1.
Because of the connection between Superman and Ohio, James Gunn decided to base his Metropolis right here in Cleveland, Ohio. Many iconic Cleveland landmarks can be seen throughout the movie, such as the Guardians Stadium during the big fight scene, and The Arcade, where Superman and Lois Lane kiss.
The members of Movie Club seemed to overwhelmingly enjoy the movie, with the overall consensus being that it was a very solid superhero movie, with touching emotional beats and a good underlying message of kindness.
Come to the next Movie Club meeting on October 22nd, at the Green Street Stadium! Movie Club will be showing a Halloween movie on the football field. For new members, make sure to bring $5 to get free popcorn and candy for all future movies this year! If you have any questions about Movie Club, make sure to reach out to the faculty adviser, Mr. Paolucci!
